1) ECU unilaterally cancelled a VT home game.

2) VT wanted to wait one more day, until Wednesday, to make a final decision. And in fact, the weather forecast changed a lot by Wednesday.

3) On Tuesday when ECU made their unilateral decision to not play at VT, VT actually learned about it first via a Tweet which said the ECU equipment truck was already on the road to Orlando.

4) ECU then scheduled NC State as a make up game for Dec 1 instead of VT.

5) All this was done by the Chancellor of ECU and a "consulting" AD who was living in (and located there) Tennessee. ECU had been without a real AD for months prior to this critical time.

6) After ECU finally hired a real AD, Whit and said AD were negotiating how to reset the series between the schools.

7) What Whit proposed was instead of VT going to Greenville in 2019 as scheduled, he wanted to move that game to Charlotte, obviously a neutral site, and split the gate 1/2 and 1/2, with some of the proceeds used to help those affected by the Sept 2018 hurricane. After that, the series would continue to run like before.

8) ECU flat refused to discuss that option. They wanted the series to proceed as if nothing happened, with VT going to Greenville in 2019, 2021, 2023 and ECU coming to Blacksburg in 2020, and 2022. Then the current long term contract would have been completed.

9) At this point, Whit figured enough was enough from the idiots at ECU, so he cancelled the Greenville portion of the contract (2019, 2021, 2023). The ECU games at Blacksburg are still on the books, but Whit said he figures ECU will not come to Blacksburg for those games.

The end result is ECU destroyed a long relationship, a fruitful relationship with VT. In the past it was good for VT, and it has always been great for ECU. ECU had a willing P5 school continually visiting Greenville. Now they are left with the occasional visit from a NC P5 school which are pretty much mandated by the NC legislature and possibly the odd other PD.

Fact is the VT fan base was getting tired of going to ECU, but as an RVing Hokie traveler, I liked it. Was a lot closer to my home than Blacksburg, and the RV accommodations were among the best of any school we have been too. But it's definitely too much considering we have that long term abominable home and home series with ODU, plus the 4 game home and home with Liberty staring us in the face.
